After the flurry of last week’s exciting news, normal systems resume here at Green Ginger Digital, and we’re back with another instalment of our Meet the Team series.
This time, we’re catching up with William Johnson, aka Billy, a member of our Paid Media team since early 2025. Billy works with clients such as EYG, Wheelbase, The Science Museum (including the National Railway Museum) and The UK Spine Centre, ensuring campaigns are running consistently, efficiently and are driving growth. He also supports with developing and implementing new campaign strategies, managing budgets, creating assets, and delivering clear, insightful weekly reporting for each client.
To find out more about him and his role, we sat down for a cuppa and a chat, discovering more about his route into digital, what he loves about being part of the team, and more.
What does a typical day look like for you?
A typical day for me starts with making sure all client accounts are live and that no issues have come up overnight across the advertising platforms or Merchant Centre. I’ll review the weekly tasks shared in client reports and ensure they’ve been properly implemented in the campaigns.
From there, I manage budgets to keep spending on track and adjust where needed based on current priorities. Finally, I work through our “business as usual” tasks across all clients to make sure everything is running as efficiently and effectively as possible.
What was your career journey like before joining the team?
My first role in marketing was at an agency in York, similar to Green Ginger, which gave me my first real foot in the industry. Not long after, I moved into an ecommerce/marketing role for a local building supply company. I enjoyed the responsibility, but as the sole marketing person, there was only so far I could develop my skills, which is what pushed me back towards agency life.
I returned to agency work as a PPC Consultant and spent around 18 months building on my paid media experience. During that time, an internal opportunity arose to move into a Junior Web Developer role. I’ve always had an interest in web, so I put myself forward and spent another 18 months working as a Junior Web Developer.
Over time, I realised web development wasn’t quite the right fit for me, and I wanted to get back into paid media, which ultimately led me to my role at Green Ginger.
What’s your favourite part of the job? And what’s the most challenging?
My favourite part of the role is working with such a wide variety of clients – it means no two days are the same and it keeps me on my toes. If I had to pick a favourite, it would probably be Wheelbase. Before working with them, I didn’t realise bikes could be quite so expensive! But they’re a fantastic brand and product, and it’s a pleasure to be working with them.
The most challenging part of my role is convincing customers they actually want the products. A lot of my clients offer high-end, premium products, so driving sales can be tough, especially when everyone’s trying to be more careful with their spending.
What would you say is your area of expertise? What do people always come to you for help with?
I’d say my area of expertise is Google Tag Manager and conversion tracking. GTM can be a really confusing tool, and it’s not something most people use day-to-day. But it’s essential for tracking conversions across all marketing campaigns.
While I wouldn’t call myself a complete expert, I’m confident in navigating the platform and setting up tracking, which can be pretty daunting for most people.
Do you have any advice for someone wanting to get into your line of work?
There are plenty of great free resources from Google, Meta, and Microsoft that give you a solid understanding of how PPC and social ads work. They’re also a great way to show potential employers that you’re willing to put in the extra effort and stand out from the crowd. On top of that, completing these courses often gives you a certification that you can add to your LinkedIn profile or CV.
What’s a tool, app or trick you can’t live without in your work?
Personally, for me, as someone who has never been great with spelling, Grammarly is a lifesaver!
In terms of marketing tools, the Google and Facebook Tag assistants are great for testing conversion tracking and tag implementation without dealing directly with website code.
How do you stay sharp and keep learning in your role?
Reddit, LinkedIn, and YouTube are all great places to find what’s new in marketing and keep up to date with industry trends.
I also find it useful to ask colleagues for advice if they have more experience on specific platforms.
What advice do you wish you could give to your younger self when starting in your career?
Don’t be afraid to ask questions, especially when you’re first starting out. From my experience, people are always happy to help answer questions, especially in marketing, where collaboration and working alongside colleagues are essential.
And finally… what do you love most about being part of GGD?
The team at Green Ginger is fantastic, and I always feel confident I can reach out to any of the team if I need help or advice with anything.
