We’ve welcomed a couple of new faces to Green Ginger Digital HQ recently, and the latest in our Meet the Team feature showcases Technical SEO Executive, Caitlin Eatwell. Caitlin joined us earlier this summer and has made a great impression on both the wider team and clients, with her mix of client management and technical understanding.
So let’s get to know her a little better, shall we?
Tell us a bit about your role here at Green Ginger Digital
As a technical SEO executive, I manage all the technical, nitpicky bits of Search Engine Optimisation.
This covers things like:
- Making sure Google knows your site exists
- Reviewing the various directives and signals a site uses to tell search engines what to index
- Making sure metadata is written according to best practices
- Checking that pages are coded in a way that helps search engines crawl them fully
- Optimising images and content in a way that doesn’t hinder site speed and other core web vitals
- Tracking key performance metrics like traffic, visibility and leads/purchases to make sure our changes are actually working
The role requires a high attention to detail and always thinking a couple of steps ahead, particularly with the daily developments around AI and what that means for how people search, so it’s a fascinating job that keeps me very busy and always learning.
What does a typical day look like for you?
The work I do changes day to day, and that’s the way I like it.
One day I could be running technical audits and reviewing a client’s website’s full technical health, another I could be optimising images, including compressing and adding alt text, another I could be working with the rest of the team to pull together a 6-month strategy encompassing technical fixes, new page opportunities, existing content optimisations and site performance reviews. I enjoy the collaborative elements of my role, but also the chance to get my head down and work solely on technical problem-solving
What was your career journey like before joining the team? Any interesting twists or turns?
My career began in influencer marketing, focusing on project management, before transitioning into the wonderful and weird world of Tech SEO.
I worked for a London agency that shared exclusive editorial and research insights into the creator economy, as well as sourcing influencers bespoke for specific campaigns and negotiating fees or arranging giftings. I managed incoming client requests, project timelines, talent manager negotiations/comms, and company administration. Sadly, after redundancy, I found myself exploring marketing opportunities in the North, having moved back up here and taken on an entry-level role to train in technical SEO, eventually joining Green Ginger Digital three months ago.
What’s your favourite part of the job? And what’s the most challenging?
My favourite part of the job is working with my colleagues, Nathan and Kirsty, to build new strategies and discuss opportunities for client websites. I feel like we all have a great level of investment in doing our absolute best for each client.
My least favourite part of the job is wasting time figuring out where a tool is on each (always slightly different) WordPress CMS. I wish they’d take a leaf out of Shopify’s book and set up a search function!
What do people always come to you for help with?
I am good at spotting gaps or mistakes on a site, whether it is Americanisations on a British page, key pages that don’t exist, or an unoptimised page title. I am also good at helping my colleagues with reviewing HTML code to fix formatting issues.
Do you have any advice for someone wanting to get into your line of work?
Have a good eye for detail and an interest in data tracking. Get stuck in wherever you can, learn as you go, always ask questions and keep on top of the industry news, or you’ll quite swiftly fall behind.
There’s never been a more intense time to work in Search, because the rate of change is faster than it ever has been, and that’s an exciting place to be when it comes to challenging projects and learning opportunities.
What’s a tool, app or trick you can’t live without in your work?
Screaming Frog, Wayback Machine, Schema Markup Validator!
How do you stay sharp and keep learning in your role?
I follow industry SEO experts such as Mark Williams-Cook.
His newsletter, Core Updates, comes out every Monday and is always packed with helpful information about what new things Google is cooking up, clear ideas about SEO best-practice debates and other advice.
What advice do you wish you could give to your younger self when starting in your career?
Your degree will not define your life! I don’t know many people working in the field they chose when they were 17, and that’s okay.
And finally… what do you love most about being part of GGD?
The team – and the spontaneous coffee runs!
